Hannah Lane
Baltimore, Maryland, USA
She/her
The main focus of her work is to conceive jazz dance as inseparable from the history and culture it was born from — researching and uplifting the jazz and nightlife histories of African American communities so that dancers engage not just with the steps, but with the people and places that created them.
Hannah's proposal is simple and direct: be a student of the dance, the music, and the culture, context, and history of where it comes from, always remembering that Lindy Hop and Jazz are Black American art forms.
Dancer, Researcher, and Historian based in Baltimore, Maryland. Throughout her time in the swing dance community, Hannah has developed a loving appreciation for jazz music and jazz dances including Lindy Hop, snake hips, and Charleston.
Alongside dance, she is passionate about sharing research that centers the jazz and nightlife histories of African American communities in her home state of Maryland and throughout the U.S., as well as uplifting the stories of Shake Dancers through her research and oral history project, Queens of the Nightclub.
Currently, Hannah serves on the board of Collective Voices for Change and is a participant in the Al Minns Next Generation Project.
